Understanding The Riots - Where Next?

Since last Saturday, a situation has escalated around the UK, with eruptions of long-repressed anger in most major cities. Whilst this anger may have certainly, at times, taken on forms that we disapprove of, we all know where this anger comes from. We are all suffering at the moment. Trying to make ends meet can be a living nightmare – benefits, jobs and healthcare going down the drain whilst the cost of housing and living rises sharply. Not to mention systematic Police harassment on our streets, daily injustice and deaths in police custody. For those right at the bottom of the pile, the young and unemployed, it seems like everything they were brought up on was false. The promise of easy credit, easy access to consumer goods, an education and social support. All this just disappears into smoke when the rich decide we don’t deserve it anymore; when they are desperate to save their system from the consequences of their own greed.

/We condemn:/

* The police, the political elite and the media for creating an atmosphere of fear, justifying greater state repression.

* The opportunism of the EDL/BNP and other far right groups

/We refuse to condemn:/

* People who looted high street chain stores, pawn shops, betting shops, banks and other symbols of capitalism.

* People who attacked the police, police property, courts, probation services and other symbols of the state.

/We are inspired by:/

* All the people who stood up for each other in the face of attack by the police and other violent gangs

* The communities that stood outside preventing arson to neighbouring flats, houses and locally-owned businesses.

But whilst we are categorically against the arson of homes, the muggings and the burglaries, are we really surprised this is happening? Here is a whole generation brought up on Thatcherism and Blairism – two ideologies that totally glorify individualism and ruthless competition. That have gone out of their way to destroy working class solidarity and colonise our areas with wealthy young professionals. That place those who trample on their communities for their own personal gain up on pedestals. These ideologies have BRED gangster behaviour amongst the poor and the only way we can counter such behaviour is by rebuilding our community spirit NOW, in spite of these doctrines, out of the ashes of this rebellion.

We are also categorically against any notion that greater police powers are a remedy to this situation, that the violence of the state and of capitalism is somehow preferable to the violence of those in our communities. Even if it was preferable, it would solve nothing – the problem here is inequality and injustice. Only we can bring about equality and justice; working together to advance our collective interests. We believe that when we build strong communities, we have a better chance of fighting back and winning. When we assemble to support each other through the difficulties of recession, instead of hiding away in our homes. When we get on the streets to defend our communities from any kind of attack. When we strike against our bosses instead of taking it on the chin. When we allocate resources for the benefit of the many and not the few. When we organise to take back what is rightfully ours instead of submitting to the thieves in Westminster and the City. When we target the rich and the state and not each other.

Whilst the riots may have taken their toll on our communities, there is no turning back now. We cannot wish them away. The screams of our youth have been heard; its time we turned them into the battle cries of our class.

Against ALL attacks on our community! For EVERYONE against the system!

I'm really pissed about the organising collective's choice of panelists. Some really fucked up, anti-sex work, anti-trans* and even anti-abortion, speakers in there including, but not excluded to:

* Sheila Jeffreys: Aggressively anti-sex work (sex work is rape), anti-trans* (trans reproduces oppressive gender roles, is false consciousness and reassignment surgery is mutilation), sadomashochism is male supremacist. Also has written that dildos are evil, penetrative sex is evil, and other bizarre bullshit. Sheila has a big voice and basically practices hate speech towards trans* and sex workers.

* Melinda Tankard Reist: Views abortion as part of the oppression of womyn. Supported the ban on the RU486 abortion drug. Is also vehemently anti-sex work and anti-porn.

* Kathleen Maltzan: Greens Candidate for Richmond Victoria. Those of you in Victoria might be familiar with her. She is anti-sex work and also famous as a (extremely ill-informed) anti-trafficking campaigner. Kathleen was subject to a viral campaign by many Aussies last year around election time as a result of her history of anti-sex feminism and anti-sexwork politics. The primary aim of the campaign was to "encourage" the Greens to never run anti-sex work campaigners as candidates.

The choice of panelists has created a space that is not safe or inclusive.

Great article here by Elena Jeffreys regarding the Swedish Laws which criminalise the clients of sex workers. As a sex worker, I wholly agree with Elena's stance on this issue. Sex work is a legitimate form of work, and sex workers deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. The Swedish model has failed to improve the conditions faced by working people, it is an abhorrent form of state intervention and sex workers, and their representative organisations, are demanding to see it thrown out.

Anti- racist demo this Sunday 16th January at 1pm the Hub in Newtown (outside Newtown Neighbourhood Centre) to say we will not accept racism in our neighbourhood.
Over the past months we’ve seen increasing levels of racism in this area.
Far-right, white supremacist groups have had a much greater presence on the
streets than in recent years – to the point where some groups have felt
comfortable having stalls on King St; putting up racist stickers; and
threatening anyone who doesn’t fit into their caricature of life in Australia.
The Australian Protectionist Party (APP), for example, have had a pre-election
stall at the “I have a dream” square, as well as gathering to protect a racist
mural in Enmore. These groups directly threaten the safety of people in this
area. They exist solely to organise violence against people of colour – whether
that be in the form of harassment, intimidation, physical attacks, or attempts
to exclude and marginalise them.
The anti-burqa mural in Enmore contributes to this. Over 2 months ago some
fuckwit artist put up this mural on the side of their business in Station St,
which originally said ‘ban the burqa’ with an image of a woman in a burqa
crossed out. This has now been changed to the equally stupid ‘say no to burqas’
with a more simplistic outline of a woman in a burqa. It plays up to the most
populist form of racist bullshit that exists in Australia - and worse still it
is in a position where it can be viewed by 1000’s of people passing on the train
line each day. This mural in Newtown has created a situation where Muslim women
in particular, and to a degree other non-white people, will feel intimidated
about being in this area, as it suggests an acceptance of these racist ideas.
In addition, groups like the Australian Protectionist Party have taken to
gathering at this mural, protecting it whenever there is a demonstration against
it. Sergio, the “glass artist” who painted it, has become a hero to this group,
and has even spoken at their forum. Both Sergio and the far-right groups who
defend his mural argue that their actions are a form of freedom of speech – but
to not stand up and confront their racist ideas and practices because of them
using this vague concept, means being complicit in the exclusion of Muslims,
non-white people and migrants from this area.
Sergio also claims that his mural is an attempt to open up a debate about
‘fundamentalism’. It is clear, however, that the painting is only a poor
repackaging of sexism and racism. Empowerment and liberation are not things that
can be prescribed and dictated to others – some people might find these things
in affirming aspects of their heritage, others by shedding all such traditional
values. An anti-racist and anti-sexist politics of solidarity has to act in
common with those who are struggling for their emancipation, not dictate what
their freedom will look like.
It’s easy for people in the Newtown area to be complacent around issues like
this – to have faith in the “cosmopolitan” flavour of the area, believing that
it doesn’t matter if these groups turn up from time to time, because racism only
happens in other areas. But if extreme racism isn’t seen in Newtown everyday,
it’s because there has been a history of fighting it. The APP were driven off
their pre-election stall because people on the street saw them and confronted
them, making them leave. Similarly, when white supremacist groups turn up in
pubs and at gigs in this area, they need to be confronted and forced to leave by
everyone who believes that this world doesn’t just exist for racist arseholes.

Come and stand with us on Sunday 16th January at 1pm the Hub in Newtown (outside
Newtown Neighbourhood Centre) to say we will not accept racism in our neighbourhood.

She is eating chips, smearing the sauce on her knuckles, and is occasionally yelling obscenities at her boyfriend. We laugh at her, but forgive her, because, well, it's been a long day of drinking at the races. Her boyfriend is just as drunk, and is urinating at a tram stop. But for some reason we don't really notice him.

Although her behaviour indicates she'd rather be wearing thongs and jeans, she feels compelled to dress like a sexual Christmas tree for the Spring Carnival. This compulsion probably has a number of roots, one being an earnest desire to be desired. Another more cynical reason is that her desire to be desired on the terms of the depth of her cleavage is nominated by the designs of the men in her society, and upheld by the women.

Sanatana Dharma or Vedic Dharma (Vedicism) is the proper name for Hinduism. The terms Hindu and Hinduism are misnomers, just as Mohammedan and Mohammedanism are misnomers for Muslims and Islam. The term Hindu is originally a geographic definition used by the ancient Iranians to label all the peoples living in the lands of the Indus Valley or east of the Indus River regardless of religious affinity or faith. The term Hindu was later adopted by the Arabs who conquered Sassanid Iran and then expanded towards the the Indian sub-continent. As the Altaic peoples, such as Mongolian and Turkic-speaking tribes, migrated westward in Eurasia they also adopted the term through interaction with both the Iranians and the Arabs. At this time in history and up to the rule of the Mugal Dynasty in India the term Hindu started gaining popular and recurrent usage, but was still used as an ethnographic term and not a religious identification label. The Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, and Vidicists of India were all called Hindus. It was during the colonial era that the British, who ruled India, coined the English-language term/word Hinduism and assigned the already existing and ancient Iranian term/word Hindu in 1830 to describe and designate the faiths and peoples of India belonging to Vedicism. Hindus are in reality all the people of India. The term Hindi, also used to label Indians and one of the main Indic languages, comes from Hindustani which also reflects the geographic nature and origins of the term Hindu; Hindustan means land of India and Hindustani people of India.

International Libertarian Declaration of Solidarity with the Struggle of the Amazonian Peoples of Peru!

We ask our libertarian comrades to organise mobilisations and demonstrations outside
Peruvian embassies in every country, in coordination with other sectors in struggle, in
order to denounce the actions of the State and the multinationals in this country.

The following statement is an international libertarian solidarity initiative with the
indigenous and Amazonian peoples of Peru, in their struggle for the defence of their lands
and their ancestral culture. These lands and this culture are being violated and
threatened by the Peruvian government in alliance with Imperialism, the multinationals and
the Right (mainly the APRA - Alianza Popular Revolucionaria Americana, Unidad Nacional and
Fujimorism), through unconstitutional Executive Orders, in the context of Peru’s signing
of the NAFTA agreement with the USA.

The Unión Socialista Libertaria calls on anarchist, libertarian and other similar
organisations throughout the world to sign this document, adopt it as their own and
publicize its contents online, on mailing lists, in magazines, newspapers, bulletins,
statements, murals, forums, public cultural and political events, and so on, with the aim
of establishing a clear libertarian, militant position on what is taking place in Peru.

We thus ask our libertarian comrades to organise mobilisations and demonstrations
outside Peruvian embassies in every country, in coordination with other sectors in
struggle, in order to denounce the actions of the State and the multinationals in this
country.

We have faith in the solidarity that typifies us as libertarian revolutionaries, that
we can make common cause with our indigenous brothers and let them know they are not
alone, that their struggles are our struggles, until such times as we can make a true
society of full freedom, autonomy and human progress, without exploited or exploiters.

Solidarity with the Struggle of the Amazonian Peoples of Peru!

The Amazonian and indigenous communities of the Peruvian jungle (especially in Loreto, San
Martín, Amazonas, Ucayali, Huánuco, Cuzco and Madre de Dios) are once again sounding their
war drums of struggle and resistance against the onslaught of the neoliberal economic
model supported by the Peruvian government (with the Aprista party at its head). They have
launched a call to popular rebellion through an Indefinite Popular General Strike which
has been going on with mass participation since 9th April this year. They have thus been
on the war foot now for over 50 days, a clear example of their valour, their organisation
and their heroism.

This intense process of indigenous and Amazonian struggle has come about because the
Peruvian State, in contravention of its own international treaties, is systematically
violating the Indigenous and Tribal Peoples' Convention (Convention No.169) of the
International Labour Organisation (ILO), which provides for obligatory consultation in
advance with indigenous peoples on any planned intervention on their lands, through the
appropriate community bodies.

In other words, the Aprista government has begun (or rather, has recommenced) a new
campaign of stealing and selling off to the best multinational offer, lands which
tradition and history have placed in the hands of all the communities (Wajún-Wampis,
Kichuas, Arabelas, Huaronis, Pananujuris, Achuar, Murunahus, or Chitonahuas, Cacataibos,
Matsés, Candoshis, Shawis, Cocama-Cocamilla, Machiguengas, Yines, Asháninkas, Yaneshas and
others, including the “uncontacted” peoples), who today are demanding their right to exist
and to resist.

The role of the Peruvian State

Law No.20653, the General Law on Native Communities, which was passed by General Juan
Velasco Alvarado's military regime in June 1974, recognised the "legal existence and
juridical identity of the indigenous Amazonian people and their territories, declaring
them to be inalienable, indefeasible and inviolable". This was confirmed in the 1979
Constitution. However, it was removed at the strike of a pen by the Fujimori Constitution
of 1993, to open the way for dispossession and plundering by successive governments,
opening the door to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and becoming law
following the Executive Orders of the second Aprista government.

We must not forget the fact that with Fujimori's 1993 Constitution the door was left open
for the plundering of resources, as mentioned above. So it is clear that work has already
begun to suffocate and isolate the communities, for the greed of the multinationals in
gaining concessions for oil, gas, mining, tourism and logging in areas traditionally
belonging to the peoples living there.

In other words, it paved the way for the State to declare the lands of the native peoples
"negotiable, in accordance with the market economy" by means of executive orders, thus
bypassing the legislature (Parliament).

Once again, the Peruvian State has shown itself to be an instrument of domination and
exploitation in the hands of the exploiting classes of this country, who are seeking to
continue to expropriate not only the political rights but also the resources of our
indigenous (native) peoples, who are now rising up in revolt against the oppressor power.

As libertarian communists, we declare that the native communities' right to free
self-determination is the exercising of popular power, as it is based on communitarian
principles, the utilization and collective use of natural resources, and on those forms of
work and collective benefit that they have traditionally preserved in the Amazon, home to
31 of the 114 world ecosystems, 95% of the country’s forests and an important potential
water and water-powered energy resource.

The struggle of the indigenous people of the Abya Yala

In the context of the Indigenous Popular General Strike, there was an important meeting of
native Andean communities in one of Peru’s southern regions, Puno. This encounter was
called the 4th Continental Summit of the Indigenous Peoples and Nations of the Abya Yala
and came to a conclusion Sunday last, 31st May), with a unanimous agreement to respect the
mother earth and its natural resources for the benefit of human beings, a strong rejection
of the privatisation of water, the presence of multinational corporations and the
neoliberal economic model.

All of this was included in the “Declaration of Mama Quta Titikaka” (Lake Titicaca, on the
Peruvian-Bolivian border), in which there was agreement to mobilise the various social and
indigenous organisations in June, in defence of the Amazonian peoples, as was a call for
marches and protests outside Peruvian embassies in every country.

It is important in itself to emphasise the nature of this indigenous summit, which is
essentially self-managed, the sort of organisation promoted by libertarian militants. In
its Concluding Recommendations, it called for “the construction of Plurinational Peoples’
Communities, based on self-government and the free determination of every people”.

Likewise, it denounced the efforts of the official press which is dedicated to
misinforming, misrepresenting or hiding the just means that are being attacked in the
Peruvian jungle, in collusion with the current neo-liberal government and its leaders -
Alan García; the vice-president and retired admiral responsible for the prison massacres
during the first Aprista government of the 1980s, Luis Giampietri; the prime minister,
Yehude Simon, previously a left-wing leader who had even been imprisoned for his beliefs
and who is now the faithful guardian of the Aprista reaction.

It is clear to see that for the bourgeoisie that controls the State under imperialist
orders, the path lies through the dispossession of the communities. It is at the same time
a plan to destroy their type of social organisation and the relationship that links them
to their land, a relationship that in essence clashes with the Western understanding of
property and is therefore a brake on the voracity of multinational Capital which is trying
to take root in these zones, usurping them in alliance with the State and turning them
into fiefdoms in order to guarantee the exploiters’ prosperity and domination.

President Alan García is lying “subtly” when he says that of the 63 million hectares of
Peruvian jungle, only 12 million belongs to the Amazonian communities, when instead it is
around 25 million, as confirmed by the leader and highest representative of the
communities in struggle, Alberto Pizango, who has been accused of “endangering the common
security and damaging public services” together with other indigenous leaders, Marcial
Mudarra, brothers Saúl and Servando Puerta, Daniel Marzano and Teresita Antazu.
Furthermore, Pizango has already been charged with “rebellion, sedition and other
offences” by the Provincial Criminal Court in Lima and is facing a third charge from the
Provincial Criminal Court in Utcubamba, Amazonas, for “disturbing the peace”.

It is clear that this series of charges and in general the judicial and political
repressio0n is part of the State’s efforts to criminalise all popular protest and repress
just social demands, negatively influencing public opinion by presenting our indigenous
brothers and sisters of Peru as “mere vandals or savages, ignorant of the progress that
globalisation brings”.

Therefore, as libertarians we believe that the struggle of the indigenous people,
Amazonian and Andean, for the defence of their land, their way of organising themselves
and their culture, is part of a minimum programme that involves the conquest of the
demands of the peoples oppressed by the State, Capitalism and Imperialism.

This minimum platform should be based on the need for or the use of direct action in order
to expel the multinationals from their lands. This is necessary in order to protect the
integrity and sustainability of the region's habitat and ecosystem – which, it should be
remembered, is one of the "lungs" of the planet – and in order that there can be
sustainable development and planned usage of the flora and fauna, on the basis of criteria
established by the communities. Furthermore, there needs to be active self-defence of
their lands, which must be restored to their original condition.

We thus believe that true, active solidarity with the indigenous and Amazonian peoples'
struggle will take the form of popular protest (agitation, propaganda, union-led strikes
and popular strikes, direct action, etc.), to be incorporated into a general platform of
struggle based on that of the native peoples.

Support the just protest of the Indigenous and Amazonian peoples

As libertarian communists who expect nothing from the State (other than its destruction),
we sympathise with the struggle of the native peoples as an immediate part of a larger
project for the liberation of all exploited people, and thus part of a wider strategy or
maximum programme of social revolution.

For this reason, we should support demands which in the short term serve to improve living
conditions and to enhance their social, political and economic organisation with the aim
of facing up to the exploiter State and destroying it from within, building those kernels
of popular power which will bring down the giant with the feet of clay that is Capitalism,
mortally wounded at a global level by a global crisis from which it cannot recover if, as
we want, it is the bourgeoisie that has to pay and not the workers.

We thus support the struggle of the Amazonian people and their various communities to seek
immediate solutions, and we join the call to demand:

* Repeal of all laws that damage or violate the interests of Native and Rural
Communities: repeal of Law No.29317, the Forestry & Wildlife law, which is the product of
a forced and partial modification of Executive Order No.1090 (the "Jungle Law") and the
related orders 1089, 1064 and 1020. In other words, the 99 Orders that were imposed on the
people without any consultation.

* Respect for the autonomy and self-determination of the native communities and their
active political participation in the making of decisions. The final decision of whether
or not to approve legal regulations or contracts for concessions must be made by means of
direct-democratic mechanisms (popular assemblies, referendums, etc.).

* Benefits and facilities so that native communities or peoples can develop their
productive, commercial and industrial activities, with the prospect of direct control over
these processes by the people themselves, based on the principles of self-management and
socialisation.

* Benefits and facilities for the commencement and promotion of education and culture
within the communities (by them and for them). More schools and qualified teachers to
promote the education of native students. In other words, the development of a rational,
high-quality educational system without those competitive, voracious tendencies that the
world capitalist market demands.

* Greater benefit from oil and gas exploration and extraction to devolve to the
native peoples, together with the building of hospitals, roads and all the necessary
infrastructure, provided it is approved by the people themselves, managed by the
communities themselves through mechanism giving them full control over their administration.

* An immediate cessation of the campaign of criminalising protest that the Aprista
government and the Peruvian Right has embarked on, together with an end to the harassment
of social activists and the other psychological means diverting attention from the
country’s social problems.

Internationalist solidarity with the struggle of the Amazonian peoples in Peru!
Immediate repeal of the Executive Orders that violate the sovereignty of the indigenous
peoples!

For the freedom and defence of the thought, culture and self-determination of all the
world’s peoples!

Against the authoritarianism of the State, organise and struggle from below!

Down with NAFTA and other capitalist trade agreements!

Imperialist multinationals and American military bases out of Latin America!

Stop the criminalisation of protest; immediate release for those arrested in the struggle!

Seranna, a local sex worker/activist/comedian turned movie producer, is jetting off to Delhi, India this week to start shooting her first film with award winning Indian filmmaker Vikrant Kishore.
The film is entitled Comparing Countries Compassion.
Her altar ego ‘Jessie Abraham’ plans to compare laws, culture, police corruption, and client condom usage to discover how these effect sex workers on a day to day level. Noting decriminalisation as a best practice for the sex industry, Seranna will interview sex workers, clients, HIV experts and sex work activists while attending an international conference.
What is Comparing Countries Compassion about?
1) Busting the myths surrounding sex work
2) A tour of the sex industry in various countries, comparing culture & politics
3) Jessie’s personal stories and experiences
4) Disseminating the message that sex work is real work, whilst being educational
5) The personal stories of individual sex workers, creating a realistic portrait of ‘the other’

Just five weeks ago it was decided the filming of the movie was to start in India, a choice made at random. It is a case of serendipity for Seranna— in India sex work is illegal. However, after many years of fighting stigma and discrimination, communities in India now consider sex work as an occupation. But there is still a long way to go, Seranna says,
‘In a country with a billion people, and government estimates that between to 25% Indians are living with HIV, I’ve never felt so proud to be an Australian sex worker: there’s never been a reported case of HIV transmission in a commercial setting in Australia.
‘Sex workers take pride in being safe sex experts. This movie will celebrate sex workers’ strength and achievements through interview, dance, and peer education. While we’re working alongside each other under state persecution, we’ve still managed to combat HIV/AIDS. I think that’s a big achievement, really.’

The unfunded project is fueled by Seranna’s passion and her desire to spread the word of condom use. ‘It’s important for everyone, all around the world, to have fair and equal access to condoms. Because informed people make educated decisions... If I can make even the slightest difference, I’ll be one happy hooker!’ Seranna gushes.

Donations are being welcomed to help fund the films production, which starts shooting on Tuesday the 24th February. The film will wrap on the day of the Festival of Colour, an event of great Hindu importance, in which locals splash rainbows of coloured paint into the streets.

Extinct Ibex is resurrected by cloning

An extinct animal, a mounta in goat, has been brought back to life for the first time after being cloned from frozen tissue.

The Pyrenean ibex, a form of wild mountain goat, was officially declared extinct in 2000 when the last-known animal of its kind was found dead in northern Spain.

Shortly before its death, scientists preserved skin samples of the goat, a subspecies of the Spanish ibex that live in mountain ranges across the country, in liquid nitrogen.

Using DNA taken from these skin samples, the scientists were able to replace the genetic material in eggs from domestic goats, to clone a female Pyrenean ibex, or bucardo as they are known. It is the first time an extinct animal has been cloned.

His memory capacity, his reflexes and his congested sinuses were only the more immediately obvious faculties of his skull that he industriously and randomly offered as sacrifice, over the years, to worms of the senses who ate their way inside out of him with virus power. “Ah…” he would sigh proudly “the places I’ve been.” As the fabric of reality began to vibrate and shimmer and the haze descended through him, the heavy fluids crashing through his dilated bloodstream, the grey green smoke shimmering in his lungs and sucking at the pulse beat. Martin and Charles were dropping partners, and the assumption they shared was that they could enjoy an increased measure of physical safety by taking shelter from the unpredictable, medication-driven enlightenment storms in each others company. Tripping on distorted suburban dreams, and driven drunk by proud faith in subjective individuality and an ingrained, belligerent sense of applied hedonics, the two of them would walk for kilometres into the city lights. They would wear backpacks, carrying a standard assortment of bottled water; mobile phones; lollipops and chewing gum; potato chips; chocolate bars; and paper and materials to transcribe vague and soon forgotten visions in frenetic hebephrenic shorthand.

One night in October, they consume a good measure of cocaine and ecstasy tablets, score for a bottle of tequila and another of cheap Greek ouzo from the local bottle shop, and start walking aimlessly towards a major airport on the other side of town. About a half hour into their trek they climb through a hole in razor wire fence and arrive at the 16^th hole of a deserted golf course. Charles sits down and drops a dying cigarette into the hole while Martin paces in ragged circles around the edges of the green. As he wanders about, his exclamations of indignation become increasingly audible. Charles is having trouble following the conversation that Martin is having with agents unknown, it would seem, to anyone other than himself “there is no tighter hierarchy than extreme wealth, and no one gets in who is not devoted to the interests of money!” He nods his head furiously and throws a half finished cigarette at the ground in frustration. “Did you think I hadn’t figured that out old man?” he chuckles cynically and lights another smoke, drawing deeply. “Did you hear that Charlie? Old Bill thinks he can tell me how the ball rolls when he’s over the hill already!” Martin wanders off purposefully towards the next hole, stopping only to stare up at the stars, yelling loudly “tell me something I don’t know that I know old man!” Charles gets up and starts after him, swigging gladly from the tequila bottle and telling himself how much it annoys him to have to bear witness to his friends reckless channelling of long dead literary outlaws.

After discarding the airport as a worthwhile destination, the two friends arrive at Lucifer’s Lounge around midnight, staggering through the door with their arms across each others shoulders and laughing demonically. Kat is waiting at the bar for them with champagne, majoun candies, shots of mescal and fresh mangoes. “You guys look fucking trashed.” She smiles affectionately at her delirious friends. “I take it the chemical demons and wander bugs still bitin’ you both eh? Well gimme another three or four hours and I’ll put this business to sleep for a while, we can dig these new shrooms that Spider Mike brought in this arvo. Says this afterglow, he gets now is real sweet and like tasting the setting sun, so I took a bunch of that off his hands too, thought maybe we’d dig some of that first eh?”

Charles Has A Dream With Predictable Consequences
Charles hustles his way through the crowded subway station towards to men’s room. Shutting himself in a cubicle he lights a cigarette and washes down a couple of StayAwake™ caffeine pills with a can of coca-cola and a cigarette. Sitting back, exhaling peacefully in the slime, he studies the writing on the walls around him.

Life on earth is an intricate dice game where you reach the finish line across the death of your mind to find out you only had one chance to play.

Satan, delivering lectures in underground bunkers, promised: armies of fallen angels; bankers of bound change; and electronic dice viruses to the control machine and built the stock market with his bare hands. Meetings were convened, appointments made and performance monitored. Pre-recorded memory shortages were tuned in and filed away safely, buried deep within the control brain’s hardwired terrestrial furnace.

The second piece, on the wall to the left, looked like it had been born freed out of the word hordes very recently; the smell of the thick black paint was still evident in the cavernous neon bunker. Impressed, Charles reached into his pocket for a paint pencil.

On the subway home, the conversation he had had earlier that morning with Audrey began to disturb him.

“Tell me about your dreams Charlie-you write your visions down don’t you-its important that you do you know…don’t you remember what we talked about last night at the beach?”

“There’s a lot I don’t remember about last night mate. In fact, I don’t really recall much of anything that happened between the last drink from the first bottle of vodka that I bought and the headache I woke up with this morning. I didn’t even realise that I was responsible for all of the cans of absinthe that I found empty in the back seat of my car until I saw my credit statement this morning.

“Kicked the mood stabilizer habit and hitting the stupid juice eh? You were very raw. Watch you don’t rot your brain out Charlie, I don’t wanna see anymore of my brothers turning into fucking lush-freaks you hear. You were talking about going to a brothel when you flew out of the club this morning. Did that show up on your credit statement?”

“It did actually.”

Charles reacted bitterly to his friends somewhat overbearing probing. He confessed defensively that he couldn’t remember his dreams, didn’t really pay much attention and saw sleep more as physical necessity than an exploration and, as such, had not bothered to take the time to record anything out of any of them.

Too vague, too personal and intimately unpredictable he said.

Publishing his dreams would be amount a masochistic and commercially suicidal act. Worthless nonsense fit only for an invisible magazine without a name.

Strictly nowhere. Randomly distorted products of a biological redneck wonderland of an otherwise useful psyche.

Audrey stormed out of the café and disappeared into the crowds, the grey dust following him like smoke. The conversation remained and kept him in unsettled companionship for the rest of the day

Why had he never taken the time to write down his dreams? He wondered if maybe this time his friend’s enthusiasm was the infectious element of the equation. Dreams are probably just semi-conscious junk aren’t they? Personalised dramatisation of unconscious desires? Over saturation of exhausted translucent amber nervous instinct visions? He bought a pad and a new black pencil from a newsstand on the way back to his apartment, determined to make a recording in the morning.

He woke up at sunrise hot and drenched in sweat gasping for water and air. Coming to his senses, he changed the sheets and reached for the writing pad, having decided before going to sleep to transcribe his experience in the third person, so that it would more easily resemble a film script he could analyse at his convenience. His journal entry ran as follows:

Charles thought about that briefcase all night every night it reached out from under his bed – the door flew open under the vulture’s stolen entrails lost in the deep dark invisible lake – the semi-permanent inhabitants arrived on the comets that baptised the lizard kings in holy fire – under his bed all night every night the earth shook again under the vulture’s stolen earthquake – the deep dark semi-permanent lake flew open invisible holy fire – lizard kings baptised by thought vultures on circling stolen comets lost in earth – all night every night the lizard kings in the stolen briefcase thought about the semi-permanent Charles – people are frozen to death on the road in Scotland when the comet reached out from under the bed – a spaceship reached out from above the bed to photocopy the pyramids under the invisible lake – a crown of thorns floats to the surface in the darkness around the bed – Charles stole the briefcase back from under the spaceship and slept in the frozen earthquake all night until the violent weather shook the bed – Charles reached out in the deep dark for the pyramids frozen entrails and was baptised by invisible photocopy spaceship fire – Charles froze to death and reached out from the invisible lake to a spaceship above the vultures earthquake in the photocopy pyramids.

The world's largest online sex survey has found Australians are lagging behind the rest of the world when it comes to safe sex.

The survey of 317,000 people from around the world has found that Australians need to lift their game.

More than 60 per cent of people admitted to having unprotected sex without knowing their partner's history.

Overall, Australians have sex on average 108 times a year but 44 per cent say that is still not enough.

Twenty-two per cent of respondents think federal Treasurer Peter Costello is Australia's sexiest politician.

Mr Howard scored a low 5 per cent and was even beaten by Federal Opposition Kim Beazley on 7 per cent.

Reporters Without Borders announces its third annual worldwide index of press freedom. Such freedom is threatened most in East Asia (with North Korea at the bottom of the entire list at 167th place, followed by Burma 165th, China 162nd, Vietnam 161st and Laos 153rd) and the Middle East (Saudi Arabia 159th, Iran 158th, Syria 155th, Iraq 148th).

In these countries, an independent media either does not exist or journalists are persecuted and censored on a daily basis. Freedom of information and the safety of journalists are not guaranteed there. Continuing war has made Iraq the most deadly place on earth for journalists in recent years, with 44 killed there since fighting began in March last year.

But there are plenty of other black spots around the world for press freedom. Cuba (in 166th place) is second only to China as the biggest prison for journalists, with 26 in jail (China has 27). Since spring last year, these 26 independent journalists have languished in prison after being given sentences of between 14 and 27 years.

No privately-owned media exist in Turkmenistan (164th) and Eritrea (163rd), whose people can only read, see or listen to government-controlled media dominated by official propaganda.

The greatest press freedom is found in northern Europe (Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, the Netherlands and Norway), which is a haven of peace for journalists. Of the top 20 countries, only three (New Zealand 9th, Trinidad and Tobago 11th and Canada 18th) are outside Europe.

Other small and often impoverished democracies appear high on the list, such as El Salvador (28th) and Costa Rica (35th) in Central America, along with Cape Verde (38th) and Namibia (42nd) in Africa and Timor-Leste (57th) in Asia.

Reporters Without Borders compiled the index by asking its partner organisations (14 freedom of expression organisations in five continents), its 130 correspondents around the world, as well as journalists, researchers, jurists and human rights activists, to answer 52 questions to indicate the state of press freedom in 167 countries (others were not included for lack of information).

Scott Parkin: peace activist or security threat?

Exactly why is the visiting American peace activist Scott Parkin a threat to Australia's national security? According to today's SMH, up to six federal police and Immigration Department officers nabbed Parkin from a Melbourne cafe on Saturday because he's been classified as a "security threat" by the Department of Immigration. The 35-year-old history teacher from Houston is being held in the Melbourne Custody Centre – at a personal cost of $130 a day – awaiting deportation.

Parkin has been conducting a series of forums on peaceful protest methods, having successfully helped coordinate the well-known anti-globalization movement, the Houston Global Awareness Collective, out of his home town. Paul Wilson, a Crikey reader who attended one of Parkin's workshops on non-violent protest, describes Parkin as a "gentle spirit that writes his ideas on whiteboards with felt tip pens and encourages protest through ideas and dialogue."

A website advertising a lecture Parkin was due to give in a warehouse in the Melbourne suburb of Brunswick prior to his arrest describes the protest methods of the Houston Global Awareness Collective as "community dialogue, teach-ins, film screenings, counter-recruitment and non-violent direct action."

His lawyer, Marika Dias of the Brimbank Community Legal Service, said Parkin had been detained by the Australian Federal Police on the authority of the Immigration Department and had his visitor's visa cancelled, as he was considered a threat to national security, although he was not told why.

According to reports in today's papers, Parkin, who has been in Australia for three months on a six month visa, was arrested on "character grounds" at the request of the Immigration Department, and will be deported "as soon as practicable."

Parkin had already visited Sydney and Brisbane without encountering any trouble, and took part in protests against US company Halliburton during the Forbes meeting in Sydney two weeks ago. And as Bob Brown points out, the Halliburton company has close ties to the current US administration, and there are fears the largely unexplained arrest occurred on orders from the American government.

It's been almost twelve years since the Zapatistas of southern Mexico said ya basta ("enough") to neo-liberalism and initiated a struggle for "a world where many worlds fit."

Today, the Zapatistas are creating a variety of participatory economic institutions to meet community needs: women's artisan co-ops, amber producers' co-ops, fair-trade coffee cooperatives and a non-sweatshop boot co-operative.

On a sunny July day, myself and a delegation of foreign solidarity activists tramped the muddy hills around Oventic Caracole, in the Los Altos region, to visit the First of January Boot Co-op. Rafael Hedez, a leading activist with the co-op, and several other compañeros welcomed us with cokes and bowls of snow-tire-tough beef soup stewed on an open fire.

Inside the workshop (basically a barn with corrugated iron roof, one of the higher-end buildings in a region of thatched farm cuts), a dozen or so men were busy cutting leather, tracing patterns, and heating branding irons. Large blue flames erupted as glue was melted to attach the soles.

After showing us around, Hedez proudly explained the ownership structure of the work-shop to us. "We have no owner. Here we are all equals," he said.

Celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Gay Law Reform in SA 1975-2005

On the morning of September 18th 1975, South Australians awoke to The
Advertiser headline: "Homosexuality Legal in SA". After a three-year battle
in parliament, South Australia had become the first State to enact gay law
reform.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, the Let's Get Equal Campaign is
holding a Rally exactly 30 years to the day, on Sunday 18th September 2005
at 2pm on the steps of Parliament House.

EVERYONE is invited to attend. Bring your banners and flags and balloons and
whistles. It's a Celebration! It's a Show of Pride and Strength and Unity of
the GLBTIQ communities.

Hosted by LGE Campaign's Matthew Loader & Roxxy Bent, speakers will include
Will Sergeant - 70s gay activist extraordinaire; Deb McCulloch AM -Women's
Adviser to the Dunstan Government; Rodney Croome AM - national gay activist
& advocate; and Linda Matthews - the Commissioner for Equal Opportunity in
SA.

There will also be performances by the Adelaide Gay & Lesbian Qwire and the
Lampshade Shop Queer Performing Arts Group.

And then from 3pm the celebration continues at The Ed Castle Hotel in the
Beer Garden, with happy hour drinks, live entertainment, and LGE Campaign
sausage sizzle and raffle fundraisers.

Dear Mr. Bush:

Any idea where all our helicopters are? It's Day 5 of Hurricane Katrina and thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be airlifted. Where on earth could you have misplaced all our military choppers? Do you need help finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears parking lot. Man, was that a drag.

Also, any idea where all our national guard soldiers are? We could really use them right now for the type of thing they signed up to do like helping with national disasters. How come they weren't there to begin with?

Last Thursday I was in south Florida and sat outside while the eye of Hurricane Katrina passed over my head. It was only a Category 1 then but it was pretty nasty. Eleven people died and, as of today, there were still homes without power. That night the weatherman said this storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you? I know you didn't want to interrupt your vacation and I know how you don't like to get bad news. Plus, you had fundraisers to go to and mothers of dead soldiers to ignore and smear. You sure showed her!

I especially like how, the day after the hurricane, instead of flying to Louisiana, you flew to San Diego to party with your business peeps. Don't let people criticize you for this -- after all, the hurricane was over and what the heck could you do, put your finger in the dike?

And don't listen to those who, in the coming days, will reveal how you specifically reduced the Army Corps of Engineers' budget for New Orleans this summer for the third year in a row. You just tell them that even if you hadn't cut the money to fix those levees, there weren't going to be any Army engineers to fix them anyway because you had a much more important construction job for them -- BUILDING DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ!

On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster. Hey, I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble and act like a commander in chief. Been there done that.

There will be those who will try to politicize this tragedy and try to use it against you. Just have your people keep pointing that out. Respond to nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making a storm like this inevitable. Ignore them and all their global warming Chicken Littles. There is nothing unusual about a hurricane that was so wide it would be like having one F-4 tornado that stretched\r\nfrom New York to Cleveland.

No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands\r\nhad no transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with this!

You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army helicopters and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are near Tikrit.

Friends and allies, News from this end of the ether is that I'm back on board with the folks at Noise and, amongst other things, am again looking after the 'words' component of the Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards (SOYA).
If you haven't heard about it yet it's a Qantas-funded noise-run project that awards *big* cash prizes, free travel and mentorships to young people (25 and under) in seven different creative categories.
Entries close on August 31 - just a couple of weeks away! At the moment I'm specifically chasing more quality written submissions so if you, or someone you know has a way with the written word then make sure they know about this project (unless you don't really like them at all and would rather they missed out on such opportunities).

If you work for an artsy or youth org I will be eternally grateful if you
could distribute this callout via your networks. We also have heaps of promotional material (posters, postcards etc) to hand out so if you want any just let me know and I will arrange to have it sent to you ASAP.

...throughout the long day i had made me ask a furthre question...he took no notice of me but?...i became sick with apprehension your father abbot in charge...with hunger suddenly hope flared...at last i heard the old man misshapen face and a high forhead...

"the end is not yet."

...I could feel myself become your studies hypothetically...the day grew older and i grew...he paused...small boys wandered around some life but you will not develop...small stones in my direction, he stopped, and looked at me...there was no response from my shattered living incarnation...the wings were taken as i entered...what different angle and the kite the packet of herbs supported three grown men tommorro morning and boy aswell...

...some time later i felt the volcanic vision belching out fuming lava...gradually my conciousness, a new suit minutes past, becoming uncomfortably aware of a stone slab in the freezing dark in my brain...

...once again the crowd of monks passed me on the steps of the kite as it went accross the updraught...the robe, and up into the air that you had just come from turbulent, and the kite had been specially flavoured...my stomach and i watched and was with you, because you are, was brought down, and carried accross One Himself...

...he looked experienced lama spoke to me...i wrinkled as he laughed:
"any turn your turn watch me carefully...he has gone to here tommorro...now you watch me put my feet on this wood."

...probing fingers dung and waste butter returned to us at last...gradually the fires die...for three days you have lain here...heavy stone walls creaked and more corridoor became cool with weakness and hunger...

history, as well as your various friends, or should i say uh associates...within this department, have given you a name?"
Murdoch chuckles and his broad shoulders shake contentedly as he shuffles happily writing in this momentary seat of power.

"What do they call him Phillips?"
"They call him the Man Of A Thousand Lies is what i heard sir."
Phillips looks at his shoes in a silent partnership with subservience.
Every mans gotta do his own job. Every man has his own job to do.
"So, they call you the Man Of A Thousand Lies, Mr Armstrong. How very interesting. I certainly hope, for both our sakes, that on this occassion you will do me the courtesy of offering up a serving of truth for our consumption here today. I really have been enjoying our little chat so far and i'm sure you realise, by now, the kind of truth that i'm now asking of you."

Murdoch pushes the bowl and the pipe accross the table towards Armstrong, who shivers as the smells from the bowl spill into the air in front of him, at once infiltrating his senses.
His muscles shudder and shift consumed with memories of chemical cohabitation. The eyes glaze over with nostalgia. Bright green and orange lights flicker accross his vision.

The flame on the end of the match is the brightest and warmest within the length and breadth of Armstrong's experience. He raises the copper pipe to his lips and his body drinks the smoke, the muscles in his arms and legs stretching out to absorb this intoxicating kiss.

There is no sound effect as Armstrong places
the pipe down onto the solid metal desk.
Time has stopped.

Murdoch's eyes both closed halfway through blinking lethargic.
Phillips is still looking at his shoes, which tap the floor to a beat still pounding through his head.
"The Truth..." states Armstrong calmly with an air of silent purpose. "...is irrelevant."

Magick and tha co-called human brain....

The human brain is not a static computing device merely receiving and processing information acquired by its sensoria but, rather, it is a dynamic and plastic network of neural centers, each specialized to handle specific tasks, coordinated with each other through a continuously changing array of associative connections between hundreds of billions of neural cells.

While the various regions of the brain are shared by all humans, and the functions of those regions are essentially the same in each of us, the connections between them and the intangible interface which integrates experience between our senses and our mind is absolutely unique to each individual. Genetic predisposition, early imprints, and life experiences each contribute to the ever-evolving construct of the individual. And behind it all in the secret center of our mind, resides the self, absolutely intangible but undeniably real, stringing together the momentary snapshots of the sensoria, creating our sense of time and guiding the processes of mind in accord with its will.
But while many may never question the way their mind and brain color their world, others seek to elevate the self to the level of meta-programmer and actively break the bonds of belief to rewire the associative network of the brain and its mind. Many tools exist for such a task, including the archaic techniques of shamanism, the use of psychedelic compounds, and the canon of western esoterica commonly known as magick. By employing these and other methods it is possible to directly modify the physiology of the brain and reprogram the mind in accord with the ideals of the self.

(Please note that this paper is not intended to present a reductionist or mechanistic view of consciousness. The visionary experiences of shamanism and the phenomenology of magick are far more profound and ineffable than if they were simply side effects of metabolism.)
